Modern individuals often take it for granted that the values that are currently associated with the sporting concept of “fair play” have always [been existed / existed] and been expected to be upheld by athletes. This, however, is a false belief. It has been pointed out that central to the ancient Greeks’ understanding of sports [were / was] the values of honor and glory, not fair play. The Greek games, which are often said to represent the true spirit of sports, did not involve an emphasis on “fairness” in the sense [in which / which] we understand that word today. For example, in modern wrestling, combatants are matched with one another based on a similarity in weight, to ensure that each match is “fair.” This was not the case in ancient Greece. The fact is that “fair play” is a modern idea that developed in fairly recent times, quickly becoming an integral part of how we view proper social behavior.
